The UK downstream oil sector comprises over 200 companies involved in the refining, distribution and marketing of petroleum products.
The members of UKPIA run the seven major oil refineries in the UK and they also market a wide range
of petroleum products. Additionally, there are filling station forecourts operated by large supermarket chains, independent retail groups, through to the independent retailer with one site.
Because of the potentially hazardous nature of petroleum products if not handled correctly, training schemes and guidance on best practice have been developed by the industry, details of which are contained in this section of our site.
Additionally, the petroleum, oil and gas, chemical and nuclear industries have established a Sector Skill Council, Cogent, which works closely with businesses and organisations to identify skills needs and help develop suitable training courses.
